Disc cutters use 2-stroke engines, which rely on a precise mix of petrol and oil for lubrication. Unlike 4-stroke engines, they don’t have a separate oil system — the oil in the fuel is what keeps the moving parts from grinding themselves to bits.

The standard mix is usually 50:1 (that’s 50 parts petrol to 1 part 2-stroke oil), but always check your machine’s manual. Using the wrong ratio — or forgetting the oil altogether — can lead to:

Piston seizure
Excessive wear
Carbon buildup
Spark plug fouling
Complete engine failure

🔧 What Happens If You Get It Wrong

If you run a disc cutter on straight petrol (no oil), the engine won’t last long. You’ll likely hear knocking, lose power, and eventually seize the piston. Too much oil, on the other hand, causes smoke, carbon deposits, and poor performance.

Signs of trouble include:

Difficulty starting
Loss of power
Excess smoke
Unusual noises

🛠 How to Fix It

If you’ve used the wrong mix:

Stop using the machine immediately.
Drain the fuel tank and refill with the correct 2-stroke mix.
Check and clean the spark plug.
If the engine won’t start or runs poorly, get it serviced — internal damage may have already occurred.

At GoHire UK, we always advise using fresh fuel and high-quality 2-stroke oil. If you're unsure, ask us — we’re here to help you keep your kit running safely and efficiently.
